- Emoticon system understanding
Mike and his Japanese friend Yamada are chatting, but they are both using different character representations of smileys. (e.g., for a happy face Mike is using :), but Yamada (^_^) ). To better understand each other, they can turn on a new feature in GMail that interprets emoticons based on their semantics regardless of their character representation.

- Emotion-based music
Stephan is very happy today. First thing he will do when he comes home is to try a new version of Musicovery. This new version is now able to automatically play music according to Stephan’s current mood, which can be seen from his status on Facebook ("Feeling :-)"). Suddenly, John starts a chat with him on Skype. They speak about stock exchange and show deep concern and dissatisfaction about the state of the market. They use different unhappy smileys. Skype and Musicovery communicate in the background so Musicovery adapts the music to the Stephan’s new mood.
- Emoticon Cloud
Mari Ann is looking at the Emoticon Cloud of her friends on Facebook which is based on their mood derived from the emoticons in their statuses. She notices that her best friend is in bad mood; she hopes that she will cheer her up by chatting with her.
- Smart Delivery
Susan desperately needs some coffee and she sets her status on her favorite Social Network “I would like ~o)”.The specialized service she is using detects that she used one of the key words for wishing something and since emoticon that follows means “coffee”, it automatically suggests her the nearest coffee home delivery shop.
- Status related ads
New version of Online Ads is launched and it is connected with Social Networks and IMs. When an user sets his status where he wishes something, e.g. “I would like ~o)”, Ads adjusts itself to show only ads for buying coffee.
- Emoticon Based environment
Alexandra is coming back from her work and she feels very tired, which she describes in her online status using emoticon “ (:| “. She enters her flat, in which she has installed a music device powered by ambient intelligence. When Alexandra enters her living room,the device recognizes her presence. Having analyzed Alexandra's online status on her Social Network, it starts to play some relaxing music to her.

Ian remembers that last week when he was very happy somebody he chatted with mentioned an interesting web site. GMail has a new feature which analyzes emoticons in chats and emails and filters these chats and emails by feelings and topics that dominated in them.So Ian starts searching the chats by date, but gets 100 results. He chats a lot. He decides to narrow the search by emotion, asking only for chats with a happy feeling. 40 results. Still too much. Then he decides to sort the results by decreasing happiness, and the chat he was looking for is among the first 3 results.

Marcelo is on a journey and he is writing an email to his girlfriend. Having finishes writing, he feels like enriching the text with a few emotions. He starts a new version of Zemanta that supports emoticon enrichment it analyses the text and suggests the words that could be either replaced or intensified with emoticons.
- Emoticon Tournament
Gmail has launched a new game: users that are competing with each others in communicating (via chat or email) only using emoticons.The one who is the fastest in explaining the given topic gets extra 100Mb for his mail inbox. Based on efficiency of their users, Gmail team can estimate if their emoticon system is rich enough.

William is chatting with his friend and they are discussing where to go out tonight. When he enters emoticon representing ‘Party’,the chat’s recommendation systems automatically displays a pop-up where William and his friend can see all parties that will be held in their town tonight.

During her day Carla has been chatting, sending emails, writing sms… in which she used emoticon ‘cup of coffee’ for a couple of times.The service she uses monitored all her outgoing messages and ‘interpreted’ it as her wish to drink coffee. Later that day, while Carla was passing near Starbucks, the service recalled her wish and informed Carla that she can buy her coffee nearby. Carla confirms that she wants to buy it and she gets from her service a map of how to get to the coffee shop.

Claude is looking at the newest feeds in his RSS blog feed reader.Every blog post in his reader has an attached emoticon which represents the emotion that dominates in all comments for that post.He can easily discard those represented with negative emoticons.
- Automatic Invitation
Chris is sitting at his favorite cafe down town. He sets his status on his favorite Social Networking tool that he is drinking coffee ( “Drinking ~o)” ). A specialized service provided by his Social Networking tool analyzes his status update and recognizes his current action.It then uses Chris’s location (e.g.,taken from Google Latitude) to “figure out” which coffee shop he is sitting in.The service also scans the area around Chris in radius of 300m searching for his friends. If the service finds Chris’s friends nearby, it automatically generates invitation message for them to join Chris, e.g. “Would you like to join me drinking coffee at Starbucks?”. Chris chooses which friends he would like to contact and sends them the invitation.
